How To Clean Gutters: DIY Guide

Cleaning your gutters is a necessary evil. It’s dirty, it’s dangerous, and it’s tedious. But it’s also important to keep your gutters clean if you want to avoid costly water damage to your home. So how do you go about cleaning your gutters safely and efficiently? Read on for our tips!

Before cleaning your gutters, make sure you know when to clean your gutters.

1. Preparation is key.

Before you even get started, make sure you have all the right DIY gutter cleaning tools for the job. You’ll need a gutter cleaning tool, bucket, garden bags, blow vac, ladders, ladder bracket, safety harness, fall protection roof anchor point, safety gear, gloves, garden hose and an impact drill.

2. Safety first.

Before you climb that ladder, make sure it’s stable and placed on firm ground. And always have someone else nearby to spot you in case you fall.

Note that according to Australian Standards, it is a legal requirement to have a roof anchor point working at heights of 2 metres or more.

3. Scoop out the gunk.

Use your gutter cleaning tool to remove any leaves, twigs, or other debris from your gutters. Be sure to dump the debris into a garbage bag or bucket so you can dispose of it later.

4. Rinse with water.

Once all the debris is out, use your garden hose to flush the downpipes to make sure they aren’t blocked. If you have a power washer, you can use that instead. Just be careful not to damage the gutters with too much pressure.

5. Inspect for leaks.

Once your gutters are clean, take a few minutes to inspect them for any cracks or leaks. If you find any, be sure to seal them up as soon as possible to prevent further damage. This is a good opportunity to also investigate and unblock any downpipes. This process ensures no waste goes down the downpipes which could cause potential blockages in the stormwater and major problems.

Cleaning your gutters may not be the most fun task on your to-do list, but it’s important to clean your gutters regularly to avoid costly water damage to your home. With our tips, you can clean your gutters quickly and efficiently – and stay safe while you’re doing it!
